A new social app called Neon Mobile has quickly climbed Apple’s U.S. App Store charts, landing at No. 2 in the Social Networking category. The app works by allowing you to make money for recording your calls.

Neon claims users can earn “hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year” by sharing call recordings that are later sold to AI companies.

According to its website, Neon pays 30 cents per minute when calling other Neon users, with daily earnings capped at $30. The app also offers referral rewards.

How Neon Records and Uses Your Calls

Tthe company claims to only record your side of the conversation—unless both parties use Neon.

The recordings are then sold to AI companies to improve machine learning models.

However, Neon’s licensing terms go far beyond call training.

By using the app, you grant Neon an exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to sell, distribute, or modify your recordings for use across any media format. This broad license raises concerns about how far the company can go with your voice data.

Privacy Concerns

Neon Mobile’s business model raises concerns about how far the company can go with your voice data.

  • Neon says it strips names, emails, and phone numbers from recordings. But experts warn anonymized voice data can still be linked back to individuals.
  • Your voice could be cloned to make fake calls or build AI-generated voices.
  • Neon does not disclose its AI partners or how they use the data after purchase.
  • Like any company, Neon is vulnerable to hacks. This could potentially lead to valuable personal data leaks.

Should You Use Neon?

While the idea of getting paid for everyday calls sounds tempting, Neon highlights the growing concerns between AI and personal privacy.

Users must weigh the short-term benefit of earning money against the long-term risks of handing over their voice data.

Once your voice is saved, it can be cloned, repurposed, or sold further without your control.
