Galaxy A24 vs Tecno Camon 20 Pro 4G: Which is a better buy?

Samsung recently released the A24 as a new addition to its Galaxy A series. Tecno also launched its midrange Camon 20 series lineup of the Camon 20/20 Pro/20 Premier in 4G and 5G variants.
Both the Galaxy A24 and Camon 20 Pro 4G are within the same retail price range of GHS 2500-GHS 3000, varying based on individual outlets.
Let’s look at some of the differences and similarities between these closely priced devices in order to give you a good gauge of which one will fit your needs better.
Display

Galaxy A24 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz and a peak brightness of 1000nits. On the other hand, Tecno’s Camon 20 Pro has a 6.67-inch AMOLED display (120Hz) and an unstated peak brightness value.
Between the two, Tecno’s device has the bigger display size and higher refresh rate. However, the A24 has the brighter and more immersive display.
Build
Galaxy A24 has a glass front and glossy plastic back with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Camon 20 Pro relies on a plastic back but with an in-display sensor.
Galaxy A24 comes in Black, Lime (Green), Red and White (gradient) colours. You can choose between Black or Blue for the Tecno Camon 20 Pro
The winner for build quality will largely depend on preference.
Camera

The camera design for the A24 follows the same look as all the other A Series devices launched this year.
It consists of a triple rear camera module arranged vertically at the top left corner of the device. The main sensor is a 50MP wide lens with optical image stabilization, a 5MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro shooter.
The selfie camera is a 13MP sensor. For video, you can shoot up to 1080p@30fps on both front and rear cameras.
Camon 20 Pro has a triple sensor module made up of a 64MP (wide), 2MP (depth) and a QVGA camera.
The camera is positioned within a star-shaped design complemented by the geometric presentation at the rear.
For selfies, the Camon 20 Pro has a 32MP camera capable of shooting up to 1080p@30fps.
There is not much of a difference in their maximum video qualities, however, the Camon 20 Pro has the upper hand with regards to pixel size (64MP vs 50MP (main) 32MP vs 13MP (selfie).
Likewise, the Galaxy A24’s advantage lies in the 2MP macro shooter which could come in handy for close-up shots as well as OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) which will compensate for camera movements when recording videos.
One thing that is for sure is both devices are duly capable of decent image quality.
Camon 20 Pro’s images are sometimes over-processed – this may be preferred for some users while others will prefer a final image closer to real life.
Processor
Both devices are powered by MediaTek Helio G99 (6nm) chipset. This chip has been used in previous Tecno devices like the Pova 4.
Tecno devices have shown good performance with MediaTek chips and the Camon 20 Pro is no different.

Samsung devices running on MediaTek processors have also performed well on benchmark tests.
Helio G99 offers impressive 4G connectivity, gaming and CPU speeds.
Seeing as both have the same processor, you may have to look at other factors in making your pick
Software
Both devices will boot Android 13 right out of the box. Galaxy A24 with OneUI 5.1, and Camon 20 Pro with HiOS 13.
However, Samsung will offer the Galaxy A24 four (4) major OS updates and 5 years of security updates.
Tecno has promised an Android 14 for the Camon 20 Pro, but there is no word on future updates.

One big drawback for Tecno devices is software, springing up two main issues – Bloatware and poor support.
Bloatware refers to unwanted pre-installed software on devices. These apps typically take up space and may not even be used by the user.
Alternatively, most pre-installed Apps on Samsung are actually used by users making the software experience a delight.
Most of Tecno’s bloatware can easily be deleted, so there is not much to worry about in that regard.
Samsung edges Tecno in the software department due to consistent software and security updates.
Battery
Both devices have a 5,000mAh battery. Galaxy A24 supports 25W wired charging, while Tecno supports 33W.
A higher watt value indicates that Camon 20 Pro will take a shorter time to charge compared to the Galaxy A24.
Both devices should keep up with a day’s use before needing a charge however, Tecno has the advantage with regard to charging speed.
Memory
The Galaxy A24 is available only in a 128GB storage variant with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. There is also a microSD slot to allow for memory expansion.
Camon 20 Pro offers 256GB with 8GB as the only variant.
Tecno’s storage offering is 2x that of Samsung, making it an attractive option for people who need more storage.
For the many others who are fine with 128GB you still can’t go wrong with either device.
