AirtelTigo launches eSIM service in Ghana

AirtelTigo has announced its eSIM service for Ghanaians, presenting an innovative way to enjoy the services they provide.

From Monday the 28th of November, existing AirtelTigo customers can go to any AirtelTigo centre to get an eSIM for free.

What is an eSIM

eSIMs have been in existence since 2016, largely preferred because they eliminate the need for a physical SIM card.

The typical plastic SIM in most phone does not just help you make calls. The sim card stores data such as your number, contacts and sometimes photos..

eSIMs (Embedded Subscriber Identity Module) work the same as physical SIMs in most aspects of day-to-day use.

SIM card evolution

Unlike physical SIMs, an eSIM is a chip that is ingrained within a device making it impractical to remove them.

One major advantage of this is the ability to switch networks without replacing the sim card.

For example, if you wanted to move from Network A to Network B. You would have to insert Network B’s SIM in your device to use their service.

eSIMs eliminate that hassle. You can easily move between networks with bearly any inconveniences.

How to upgrade to an eSIM

To be able to use an eSIM, your device has to be compatible. (See a list of supported device below)

To check if your device supports eSIM;

  • First, dial *#06#

If your device is compatible, you will receive a barcode starting with ‘EID‘.

  • Visit any AirtelTigo office and request an eSIM.

Currently, AirtelTigo eSIMs support 3G connectivity, with a promise for 4G support soon.

Which phones support eSIMs

Most of the newer Apple and Samsung devices have support for eSIMs.

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series are compatible with eSIMs.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20, S21 and S22 series
  • Google Pixel 3 and newer
  • Huawei P40, P40 Pro and Huawei Mate 40 Pro
