Gov’t to Improve Data Bundles Nationwide from July 1

From July 1st, 2025, Ghanaians will receive more data for the same price, a result of government intervention and negotiations with major telecom providers.

The adjustments, ranging from 10% to 15% increases in data allocations, aim to improve internet affordability for Ghanaians.

New Data Bundle Rates vs Old Rates

The revised data bundles affect all plans across the three major telecom providers. Below is a comparison of current and new rates for key bundles:

  • MTN Ghana: MTN will increase all bundles by 15%. Its GH₵399 bundle, previously adjusted to GH₵350 for 92.88GB, will be restored to offer 214GB for GH₵399.
  • AirtelTigo: All AT Ghana data bundles will see a 10% increase. For instance, the GH₵400 bundle, which currently provides 195GB, will offer 236GB starting July 1.
  • Telecel Ghana users will also experience a 10% increase across all bundles, Telecel’s GH₵400 bundle will rise from 90GB to 250GB, significantly boosting data for users.

Gov’t policy for change

The directive follows extensive discussions between the Ministry of Communications and telecom operators, balancing consumer needs with industry growth.

Minister for Communication Samuel N. George acknowledged the financial impact on providers, stating, “These increases will come at considerable cost to the network operators, but our consultations have prioritized Ghanaians.”

The move aligns with the government’s goal of enhancing digital access, especially as 30.1% of Ghanaians remained offline in early 2025.

The ministry is also exploring long-term measures, such as reducing the 39% tax burden on telecom services, to further lower data costs.

Public Reaction

Reactions on social media generally reflect optimism and excitement. However, some users expressed skepticism, calling for unlimited data plans like those in other countries.

The changes take effect July 1, 2025, allowing telecoms time to adjust systems. This initiative marks a step toward better internet access for Ghana’s 24.06 million internet users, supporting education, business, and connectivity.
