How to Track an Android Phone to the exact Location

Losing your phone can be a highly unpleasant experience for anyone. Be it from theft or forgetfulness, the realisation that you do not have your phone with you can be hard to deal with.

Nowadays, as technology advances, most aspects of our lives are on our mobile phones. Banking details, passwords, ID cards, contacts, photos, music, and so much more of what defines us as individuals have a link of some sort to our smartphones.

With the same technology on our side, you can track and find a missing phone in a few minutes.

Here are the steps to do so.

Enable Find My Device

Google has a built-in service for Android phones called Find My Phone.

With Find My Phone, you can locate your device in real-time for free, even when offline.

But to use this on a rainy day, you must enable it first.

Setup Find My Device

Sign in to https://www.google.com/android/find using the same Google account on your device.

Additionally, you can install the Find My Device app on your phone.

Find your phone using FMD

If your device is missing, follow these steps to locate it.

  • Open the Find My Device app on another device or sign in to the website on a browser.
  • Select the device(s) you want to locate.
  • The last location of the device is shown on the map, which is typically accurate to up to around 20 metres.

After locating the device, you can take some actions such as sounding an alarm, locking your phone, or erasing your data.

What to do after locating your phone

If you harmlessly forget where you left your device last, you can activate an alarm that will ring for five minutes to help you locate it. For it to be effective, you must be close to the device to hear it.

  • Select ‘Play sound’ under the device you want to find to set the alarm up.

If your device has been stolen or beyond reach, activate security barriers like a PIN or password to lock it.

If Find My device can’t help you find your phone, you should look at IMEI next.

What is IMEI

Your phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique 15-digit number linked to your phone.

Every electronic device manufactured has a unique IMEI number assigned to it, which can be used to locate it.

Using IMEI to locate phone

Here are a few ways to know your phone IMEI number

  • To find your IMEI number, dial *#06#. Save the number in a safe place.
  • Check the box the device came in. Phone boxes will typically have the device’s IMEI.
  • Alternatively, you can find it using the Find My Device app. Tap on the settings icon under the device you want to locate.

As an individual, you may not be able to do much with an IMEI number. However, it can come in handy when working with authorities like the police.

Your network provider, in partnership with authorities, can use your IMEI to locate your device or at least block its use.
