Meta faces trial that may lead to Instagram and WhatsApp separation

Meta is currently facing an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission, which alleges that the company has established a monopoly in the social media industry through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

In 2020, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiated legal proceedings against Meta,, alleging that the company’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp were designed to eliminate competition in the social media market.

Although Chief Judge James Boasberg dismissed the FTC’s lawsuit in 2021, the agency was able to successfully file an amended complaint that ultimately allowed the lawsuit to proceed.

In April, Meta sought to have the FTC’s case dismissed, but Judge Boasberg has now sided primarily with the FTC. He did, however, reject the FTC’s argument that Meta’s policy of limiting developer API access to those who agree not to compete with Meta’s apps was anticompetitive.

In a statement, Meta spokesperson Christopher Sgro expressed confidence that the trial will show the positive impact of Meta’s purchases on consumers.
