MTN launches 5G phone in South Africa

MTN has released its own branded smartphone, the MTN Icon 5G. The smartphone supports 5G connectivity and is available only in South Africa.

This smartphone is designed for South Africans who want to upgrade from older 2G and 3G networks to 4G and 5G, but may not have the budget for an expensive phone.

As a special welcome offer, new prepaid buyers of the phone will receive a one-time bonus of 21GB and 3GB of YouTube data when they top up their data.

The smartphone is available on a Core price plan at R219 ($12) per month over 36 months. This includes 1GB of data and 50 voice minutes per month.

The Icon 5G boasts a large 6.6-inch screen, a powerful 5,000mAh battery, and a storage capacity of 128GB.

The device features a dual camera setup on the rear, comprising a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP secondary camera. The device uses an 8MP sensor for selfies.

The Icon 5G, priced at R2,499 ($138), is available only in black.
