Speeding tickets in Ghana? Everything You Should Know.
Speeding tickets are used in many countries around the world to keep drivers in check and ensure safe roads. Last year, the Ghana Police Service launched the Traffitech program, which uses cameras to monitor roads and help the police penalize lawbreakers.
How do speeding tickets work?
Speed cameras installed on the road use radars to detect the speed at which a car is moving. These cameras can also take photos of the incident as proof.
Additionally, special cameras which are found on traffic lights can detect drivers who run through red lights.
Similarly, Ghana’s Traffitech will use cameras and sensors placed at strategic locations to automatically capture a picture or video of vehicles that disregard road traffic laws.
These video recordings are automatically transmitted to an office for validation, after which the offender is sent an SMS notification.
Traffic Offenses and Payment
Traffitech will be used to enforce several offenses, here are a some of them.
- overspeeding
- crossing a red light
- expired roadworthiness and driver’s license
- wrongful overtaking
- use of mobile phones while driving
- abuse of siren
- not wearing a seatbelt
The notification will include the location, date, and time of the traffic Offence, as well as the vehicle registration number, Offence description, payment amount and deadline.
Once the notification is sent, offenders have 14 days to pay the fine at a bank or via the link in the notification message.
Offenders will pay an additional 1% penalty on the original Traffitech-GH fine for each day of default after the 14-day allowable payment period.
