Starlink in Ghana. Who cares?

Starlink, the Elon Musk-owned internet service provider company, will soon officially start operation in Ghana, offering over 33 million citizens access to high-speed internet.

Most of the internet we know and use today is based on a network of cables that enable us to send information across the world.

Starlink, on the other hand, uses satellites and radio signals to transmit internet data to its subscribers – allowing even people in very remote areas access to the internet because of its wider range of connectivity.

Starlink hardware kit

The technology behind Starlink requires some hardware, which comes at a one-time cost of approx GHS 5,000.

In addition to the hardware, there are four monthly plans from which you can choose from.

  • Standard package starts at GHS 770 (suitable for households)
  • Priority costs GHS 1078 and is recommended for business and high-demand users
  • Mobile package costs GHS 1540 (for campers, nomads) and
  • Mobile priority which starts at GHS 4428
Starlink app

In order to Starlink’s services, you will require a kit that includes a Starlink dish, Wi-Fi router, power supply, cables, and a base. The dish is easy to set up and only needs to be placed outside with a clear view of the sky. You can manage all processes using the Starlink app.

Starlink is perfect for people who live in remote areas where access to the internet is difficult. Or for individuals who want better connectivity.

However, the price could be a drawback to some. Besides paying about GHS 5000 for the hardware, you also need to pay a monthly fee to use it.

Schools and hospitals in remote areas are some of the areas which could benefit from Starlink. By making the web accessible to such students, the digital inclusivity gap can be reduced.

Healthcare centres in underserved regions can also benefit from Starlink with regards to research, telemedicine and several others.

That’s all good if these students and health centres have the additional infrastructure and devices to access the internet in the first place.
