WordPress 5.4: What’s New? (New Features, Blocks and more)

WordPress 5.4 “Adderley” is the newest release from WordPress. It comes with some exciting new features which will greatly improve content creation. Let’s explore what’s new in WordPress 5.4 and how you can prepare your website/blog for it.

Block-related improvements

WordPress 5.4 has introduced 2 new blocks to the Block Editor – the Social Icons Block and the Buttons Block.

1. The Social Icons Block


As the name suggests, the Social Icons block allows you to add social media icons in your posts and pages. The social icons can be added to your content in a much more flexible way than just in the top and footers of your site. For example, you can add social media icons at any position within your content.

With this flexibility, it might be easier for you to direct readers to social pages at very specific points in your content.

The Social Icons block only allows you to add social media icons with links to your profiles. It does not add social sharing buttons. For that, you’ll still need a plugin with sharing features.

2. The Buttons Block

WordPress 5.4 introduces the Buttons block which allows you to add multiple buttons to your site.
This new feature makes it easy to drop multiple clickable buttons into your content. You’ll be able to customise their colours, styles and more.

More Color Options for Blocks


WordPress 5.4 offers new colour options for multiple blocks. This allows you to create more engaging layouts for your posts and pages.

Previously changing the colour affected all the text in a paragraph. With WordPress 5.4, you can now change the colour of any text inside a paragraph block.

Several additional block-related features have been improved as well.:

• More colour options, including text in paragraphs;
• The ability to upload featured images via drag-and-drop;
• Directly changing image sizes;
• Fixed ‘block’ toolbar on mobile devices.

3. Embed TikTok Videos in WordPress

WordPress 5.4 includes Embed support for TikTok videos. For all the TikTok users, this means you can now add TikTok videos to your WordPress posts and pages just like you would for YouTube videos.

4. Enhanced privacy tools

With WordPress 5.4, we see also an improvement in existing privacy tools, including the existing personal data export feature.

5. Improvements for developers

WordPress 5.4 comes with several exciting additions for developers.

Also, there will be plenty of technical code improvements in this update. These range from application program interface (API) improvements to adding keyboard shortcuts to the block editor
