I bet you’ve seen green, yellow and grey boxes on your Twitter timeline, yep! That’s Wordle.

Wordle is a word puzzle game, where players have to correctly guess a 5-letter word within 6 attempts.

What even is WORDLE?

Wordle is the new fun word game everyone is playing.

Wordle’s beginnings can be traced back to Josh Wardle, a software engineer who created a word guessing game for his partner in 2021.

Initially, the game was made exclusively for Josh’s partner, but it gradually became popular among his friends and family. Today, it is being played by people all over the globe.

What are the rules?

The player has to correctly guess a 5-letter word out of random letters.

The player has six chances to guess the word.

After the first try,

  • The game then tells you which of the letters in your word are correct and whether they are in the correct position of the secret word.
  • Letters that are not in the secret word turn grey.
  • If the letter is in the secret word, but not in the right position, it turns yellow.
  • If the letter is correct, and in the correct position, the box turns green.
  • There’s also a good chance you could guess the secret word on the first try.

There’s only one secret word per day, which means each user has only one play for that day and must wait till the next day for a new secret word.

Wordle is a fun game to play with your friends. You can also share your results on social media.

Tips to win at Wordle

Unless you’re an absolute genius or foreteller, you would mostly rely on intuition to win.

  • Guess the vowels first: It’s only 5 letters, find out where the vowels should be and work your way around it. Words like ADIEU, AUDIO, PIOUS are high in vowel count and would give you a good headstart.
  • Don’t repeat greyed letters: This sounds like a no-brainer but you can better your chances at a 2/6 or 3/6 score by avoiding grey-out letters.
  • Listen to your instincts: Nothing beats your gut feeling, go with it.

Wordle is currently available only via this website. There are countless variations of Wordle springing up on Apple Store and Play Store. At the time of writing, Wordle does not have an iOS or Android app.
